Fourth-ranked Banana Slugs open weekend with sweep of Brooklyn.

THOUSAND OAKS-  UC Santa Cruz hit .431 in the match to make quick work of Brooklyn College in a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-11, 25-16) at Cal Lutheran University.

UCSC improved to 13-2 on the year while Brooklyn dropped to 1-3.

The Banana Slugs never trailed in the first two sets. The third set however opened with the Bulldogs opening up a 3-0 lead. UCSC came back with a 4-0 run which included two Anthony Sagely kills and an ace from Ian Pizzuti. The teams tied the next three points until UCSC took control with a 9-2 run to make it 15-8, with a block by Sagely and Justin Fortner as an exclamation.

Pizzuti led UCSC with 9 kills while hitting .467. Ryan Manley and Fortner each had 8 kills. Sam Wittert had 24 assists in relief of starter Evan Kittle who had 14 assists in the first set.

Things get tougher Saturday for UCSC, who face North Central in a rematch from last weekend and a match against JC power Orange Coast College before finishing the day with an evening match at Division I Cal State Northridge.
