LA JOLLA - Facing their second-straight higher Division opponent on the road, UC Santa Cruz was swept by the UC San Diego Tritons 3-0 (22-25, 18-25, 22-25) in the 26th all-time meeting between the two UC rivals.
UCSD improved to 5-6 with their second-straight win while UCSC fell to 6-7.
The host Tritons opened set one with a 5-0 run but UCSC settled and took advantage of UCSD errors to tie it at 19. UCSC then took the lead and was up 22-21 thanks to a block by Raymond Cascio and kills by Cascio and Jacob Shapiro . However, the Tritons closed the set out with a 4-0 run to go up 1-0.
The hosts opened set two with a 8-1 start and ran away with it, never letting UCSC get within 5 points.
The third set was the most evenly played. UCSC got the lead early and raised it to 9-7 on a kill from Tennessee Fulks and block by Kyle Donohoe and Cascio. UCSC kept their two-point lead all the way to 21-19 courtesy of Cascio's ace. However, the Tritons tied it at 21 on consecutive UCSC errors. Fulks's kill gave the lead back at 22-21 but UCSD closed the match like the first set with a 4-0 run to seal the sweep.
Shapiro led UCSC with 9 kills while Cascio had 6 to go with 4 total blocks. Fulks had a season-high 5 kills while hitting .200 on 20 attacks.
Overall, the Tritons outhit UCSC .258 to .099, while the Banana Slugs had a 7-5 block advantage.
The Banana Slugs travel to the Midwest next weekend for four games, starting Friday afternoon at North Central in Naperville.
