Banana Slugs Finish Third in Pacific Coast Swim Conference Championships

MONTEREY PARKS, CA -- UC Santa Cruz took part this weekend in the 2015 Pacific Coast Swim Conference Championships. The event, which was held at the Splash Aquatic Center in La Mirada, was spread out over four days and featured competition from NCAA Divisions I, II and III and the NAIA level. 

On Wednesday, the Banana Slugs' men's team had Travis Rogers and Spencer Reed finish sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 1,000 yard freestyle. Rogers had a time of 9:52.71 and Reed had a time of 9:55.15. Brian Berger finished ninth with a time of 10:21.18 and Ben Sitzer finished eleventh with a time of 10:31.98. In the 200 yard medley relay, the Banana Slugs finished with a time of 1:34, which was good enough for fourth place. The Banana Slugs finished even better in the 800 yard freestyle relay where they finished third with a time of 6:54.56. For the women's team, in the three meter diving competition, Valeria Curiel finished eighth and Emma Hartung finished tenth. Daisy Iglesias rounded out the Banana Slugs' contingent in fourteenth. Krystal Feri finished the 1,000 yard freestyle with a thirteenth place time at 10:55.16. In the 200 yard medley relay, the Banana Slugs finished with a 1:52.14 time which was good enough for tenth place. In the 800 yard freestyle relay, the Banana Slugs finished with a time of 7:52.40 which placed them in ninth. In the points competition, the Banana Slugs had 147 points on the day and were in sixth place. UC San Diego led the competition overall with 253 points.

On Thursday, in the men's competition, in the 500 yard freestyle, Kendall Pawlowski finished eighth with a time of 4:40.47 and Cameron Braun finished ninth with a time of 4:38.88. In the 200 yard IM, Casey Colella finished sixth with a time of 1:55.32. In the 50 yard freestyle, Ivan Garin finished just .23 seconds behind first place finisher Marko Tanasovski of Fresno Pacific University. Garin's time was 20.69 seconds. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the Banana Slugs team finished in third with a 1:24.34 time. In the women's competition, in the 500 yard freestyle, Alison English finished in twelfth place with a time of 5:10.76. In the 50 yard freestyle, Ryan Springer-Carter finished with a time of 24.55 in nineteenth place. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the Banana Slugs' team finished with a time of 1:40.23 which was good enough for tenth place. Through two days of competition, the Banana Slugs were third in the overall team competition with 683 points. UC San Diego led the overall competition with 1,159 points. In the men's competition, the Banana Slugs were second with 473 points, which trailed UC San Diego by 133 points for first. In the women's competition, the Banana Slugs were ninth with 210 points. UC San Diego led the women's competition with 553 points.   

On Friday, in the men's competition, in the 400 yard IM, Tyler Andree finished fourth with a time of 4:09.92. Dane Doran finished sixth with a time of 4:17.17 and Brian Berger finished seventh with a time of 4:21.12. In the 100 yard butterfly, Garin finished second with a time of 49.34 seconds. In the 200 yard freestyle, Mason Emery finished second with a time of 1:40.09. Cameron Braun finished sixth with a time of 1:43.06 and Kendall Pawlowski finished seventh with a 1:44.54 time. In the 100 yard breaststroke, Casey Colella finished eighth with a 57.47 time. In the 100 yard backstroke, Whittlesey finished with a time of 53.42 which was good enough for seventh place. In the 400 yard medley relay, the Banana Slugs finished third with a time of 3:23.81. In the women's competition, Feri finished twelfth in the 400 yard IM. In the 100 yard butterfly, Megan Roby finished twenty first with a time of 59.66 seconds. In the 200 yard freestyle, Alison English finished nineteenth with a time of 1:57.28. In the 100 yard breaststroke, Jenna Riley finished with a time of 1:07.21 which placed her in fifteenth place. In the 100 yard backstroke, Hannah Bratton finished thirteenth with a time of 1:00.65. In the 400 yard medley relay, the Banana Slugs finished ninth with a time of 4:04.04. 

On Saturday, in the men's competition, Travis Rogers finished sixth with a time of 16:36.76 in the 1,650 yard freestyle and Jacob Reynolds finished tenth with a time of 17:16.99. In the 200 yard backstroke, Whittlesey finished eighth with a time of 1:58.62. In the 100 yard freestyle, Garin finished fifth with a time of 45.86. In the 200 yard breaststroke, Colella finished sixth with a time of 2:04.77. In the 200 yard butterfly, Pawlowski finished in fourth place with a time of 1:55.46. In the 400 yard freestyle relay, the Banana Slugs finished third with a time of 3:07.73. In the women's competition, in the 1,650 yard freestyle, Alison English finished eleventh with a time of 18:01.35. In the 200 yard backstroke, Hanna Bratton finished twenty second with a time of 2:17.42. In the 100 yard freestyle, Springer-Carter finished nineteenth with a time of 53.31. In the 200 yard breaststroke, Feri finished sixteenth with a time of 2:26.57. In the 200 yard butterfly, Roby finished fourteenth with a time of 2:12.33. In the 400 yard freestyle relay, the Banana Slugs finished eleventh with a time of 3:39.71. 

In the points competition, UC Santa Cruz finished third overall with 1,704 points. UC San Diego won the overall competition with 2,943 points. UC Santa Cruz finished second in the men's competition with 1,270 points. UC San Diego won the men's competition with 1,490 points. In the women's competition, UC Santa Cruz finished ninth with a total of 434 points. UC San Diego won the women's competition with 1,453 points. 

The Banana Slugs will return to the pool tomorrow as they will take part in the UC San Diego Last Chance Meet. The meet will take place in La Mirada.
