OAKLAND (10-22) – UC Santa Cruz took part in the 2016 Bay Area Invitational in the first event of their season. The event took place at Mills College in Oakland. Their opponents included two NAIA and NCAA Division III schools and one NCAA Division II school.
In the men's competition, the Banana Slugs had competitors finish in the top ten in all fourteen events that took place and in thirteen of those events, the Banana Slugs had competitors finish in the top five. Individually, Tyler Andree (1,650 yard freestyle and 400 yard individual medley) won two events, Wesley Whittlesey (100 yard backstroke) won one event and, as a team, the Banana Slugs won three events (400 yard medley relay and the 200 and 800 freestyle relays).
The women's team had participants finish in the top ten in nine of the fourteen events that took place. Individually, Krystal Feri had the best finish for the Banana Slugs as she finished third in the 100 yard breaststroke.
In the women's team competition, UC Santa Cruz finished fifth with 293 points. CSU East Bay won the team competition with 696 points.
The next time the Banana Slugs will hit the pool will be November 12th as they take on Fresno Pacific University and Fresno State University in Fresno at noon.
