Banana Slugs Compete at PCSC Championships; Curry Named Swimmer of the Month

MONTEREY PARK (2-11) – UC Santa Cruz took part in the 2017 Pacific Coast Swim Conference Championships. The event, which was held at East Los Angeles Community College, was spread out over four days. In the points competition, UC Santa Cruz finished third in the men's competition with 1,255.5 points. UC San Diego won the men's competition with 1,684 points. In the women's competition, UC Santa Cruz finished tenth with a total of 370 points. UC San Diego won the women's competition with 1,601 points.

The Banana Slugs' competition came from every division of collegiate athletics. On Wednesday, the Banana Slugs' men's team had Eli Cirino who finished with the best finish of the day for the Banana Slugs as he finished second in the three meter diving competition. In the 1,000 yard freestyle, Tyler Andree finished second. The 200 yard medley relay team finished third. The 800 yard freestyle relay team finished third. For the women's team, Krystal Feri finished nineteenth in 1,000 yard freestyle. In the 200 yard medley relay, the Banana Slugs finished eleventh. In the 800 yard freestyle relay, the Banana Slugs finished tenth.

On Thursday, in the men's competition, in the 500 yard freestyle, Jason Williams finished ninth with a time of 4:35.34. In the 200 yard IM, Casey Colella finished eighth with a time of 1:56.80. In the 50 yard freestyle, Ivan Garin finished fourth with a 20.40 time. The 200 yard freestyle relay team had the best finish as they placed fourth with a time of 1:25.08. In the women's competition, in the one meter diving competition, Ayves Mykela finished fifteenth with a 166.95 score. In the 200 yard IM, Ellen Curry finished twenty first with a time of 2:13.94. In the 50 yard freestyle, Ryan Springer-Carter finished thirteenth with a time of 24.29. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the Banana Slugs finished eleventh with a time of 1:40.52.

On Friday, in the men's competition, the Banana Slugs finished fourth in the 400 yard medley relay with a time of 3:29.12. In the 400 yard individual medley, Tyler Andree finished sixth with a time of 4:10.83. In the 100 yard butterfly, Garin finished fourth with a time of 49.83. In the 200 yard freestyle, Mason Emery finished seventh with a time of 1:44.79. In the 100 yard breaststroke, Colella finished seventh with a time of 58.19. In the 100 yard backstroke, Wesley Whittlesey finished fifth with a 52.51 time. In the women's competition, Curry finished twelfth in the 400 yard individual medley with a time of 4:46.81. In the 100 yard butterfly, Megan Roby finished sixteenth with a time of 58.95. In the 200 yard freestyle, Laura Mendenhall finished twenty second with a time of 2:00.61. In the 100 yard breaststroke, Katherine Arnold finished eighth with a time of 1:05.63. In the 100 yard backstroke, Allison Dominguez finished twenty sixth with a time of 1:04.13.

On Saturday, in the men's competition, in the 1,650 yard freestyle, Andree finished seventh with a time of 16:35.92. In the 200 yard backstroke, Whittlesey finished eighth with a time of 1:57.34. In the 100 yard freestyle, Garin had the best finish of the day for the Banana Slugs as he finished third with a time of 45.77. In the 200 yard breaststroke, Colella finished fifth with a time of 2:06.08. In the 200 yard butterfly, Williams finished fifth with a time of 1:53.79. In the 100 yard IM, Patrick Herbert finished fifth with a time of 54.42. In the 400 yard freestyle relay, the Banana Slugs finished third with a time of 3:08.05. In the women's competition, in the 1,650 yard freestyle, Kelley Henderson finished nineteenth with a time of 18:47.07. In the 200 yard backstroke, Dominguez finished twenty second with a time of 2:16.79. In the 100 yard freestyle, Springer-Carter finished eighth with a time of 52.73. In the 200 yard breaststroke, Feri finished fourteenth with a time of 2:29.17. In the 200 yard butterfly, Curry finished fourteenth with a time of 2:13.98. In the 100 yard individual medley, Katherine Arnold finished eighteenth with a time of 1:03.93. In the 400 yard freestyle relay, the Banana Slugs finished tenth with a time of 3:37.44.

Earlier this week, Curry received the A3DI Women's Swimming Student-Athlete of the Month honors for the month of January. The Vacaville, California native won the 200 yard individual medley at the University of the Pacific on January 28th, posting a time of 2:20.03. The senior also won the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:30.55 against Dixie State University on January 21st. She also took the 200 yard individual medley at the Chris Knorr Invitational at California Lutheran with a time of 2:20.5. The senior also won the 200 yard butterfly at the event, posting a time of 2:19.68.                                                                       

The Banana Slugs will wait to see if they will participate in the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships. The participants will be announced on February 27th at 5 pm.
