Banana Slugs compete well at Steve Scott Invitational

IRVINE - UC Santa Cruz had several athletes perform well at the Steve Scott Invitational hosted by UC Irvine.

On Friday, Davis Kepon improved his school record in the javelin with a toss of 51.93 meters (170 ft 4in). Pole vaulter Mason Pierce was 15th with a height of 4.45m (14ft 7 1/4in). Max Schoerner had a PR in the Long Jump of 6.46m (21ft 2 1/2 inches) to finish 24th.

Freshman Abby McPhillips set a pair of school records. She placed 8th in the High Jump with 1.58m (5 ft 2 1/4in) to break by .5 inch Zakiya Sharpe's school record which had stood since 2009.

McPhillips also joined Natalie Marquardt, Nancy Alvarado-Zavaleta and Sydney Gutierrez to run the 4x400 meter relay in 4:04.75, bettering the school mark the three upperclassmen set exactly a year ago on the same track.

Jordynn Dorado continued her excellent season with another PR of 12.72m (41 ft 8 3/4 in) in the shot put to place 11th.

The Banana Slugs have two meets remaining next month to make a push for the NCAA Championships, starting with the Sacramento State Open next weekend.
