Slugs Drop Season Opener
ROCKLIN, CA -- In a close battle, the Slugs were unable to pull out a victory against William Jessup University on Saturday night, losing on the road 48-56. JuniorMegan Gaynor came back from an ankle injury to lead the Slugs with 19 points despite being in foul trouble for most of the game. Gaynor was the lone Slug in double digits, as William Jessup held UCSC to 48 points and a 38% shooting night.
The first half proved to be an evenly matched battle; neither team was able to hold onto the lead until Jessup made the final basket of the half giving them a 29-27 halftime lead.
In the second half, UCSC was unable to bounce back and take control of the game. The two teams traded baskets with the Slugs down 42-44 with 7 minutes left in the game. Turnovers and missed opportunities would allow Jessup to pull away with an 8-point lead with 3 minutes left, and the Warriors never looked back.
For the Slugs, Megan Gaynor shot 8-16 from the field, going along with her 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Senior Jenna Chabot added 9 points to go along with her team high 6 rebounds, while Senior Point guard, Rachel Ocampo led the Slugs on defense with 5 steals, adding 3 points and 2 assists on offense. Brina Mocsny came off the bench to add 6 points, going 2-2 from the field and 2-2 from the line.
Jessup had three players in double figures; Taylor Lumas led the way with 20 points and 8 rebounds. Alexandra Rico had 17 points on a 7 for 9 shooting night, while Danae Tate added 10 of her own.
The Slugs have two days off before they face Dominican University (NAIA) on Tuesday night at the West Field House -- Tip-off is set for 7:00pm.
