Slugs Drop Season Finale to Dallas
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- The Slugs put up a fight in their final game of the season in the Colorado College Classic, but were unable to overcome a strong University of Dallas team, as Kristy Malone's 22 points led the Crusaders to their 12th victory of the season, 71-61.
The Slugs went into halftime down just 4 points, largely due to the hot hand of Senior Jenna Chabot, Chabot was 5 for 8 from the field (63%) and knocked down 3 3-pointers for 13 first half points.
The second half would be a close battle as the Slugs left everything they had on the court, but the Crusaders would capitalize on a second half scoring drought as they extended their lead to double-digits. Freshman Kayleigh Calandri would be the spark of a Slugs' comeback pulling within 5 with minutes left, Calandri would score 18 of her 20 points in the second half. Missed freethrows and turnovers late in the game would keep the Slugs from their 8th victory. Forced to foul in the last minute of the game, the Crusaders would seal the game from the free throw line, extending their lead to 10.
Junior Guard Kristy Malone led all scorers with 22 points, going 4 for 8 from beyond the arc. Two other Crusaders would finish in double digits; Ana Castillo recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, Shanie Cardinal came off the bench to add 13 points.
For the Slugs, Kayleigh Calandri would finish with a team -high 20 points and was named to the All-Classic Team for her weekend performance. Calandri had two 20+ point games and totaled 3 steals, 2 blocks, 44% from the field, and 100% from the freethrow line.
Jenna Chabot ended her career with another double-digit performance, finishing with 13 points, going 5-10 from the field and 3-6 from beyond the arc.
