SANTA CRUZ, CA -- On Friday night, the UCSC Women's Basketball Team picked up their 5th win of the season with a 66-47 victory over visiting William Jessup University. Senior Jenna Chabot and Freshman Kayleigh Calandri combined for 44 points on the night: shooting 51% from the field (16-31), 53% from beyond the arc (7-13), and 71% from the charity stripe (5-7).
In the first half, Calandri would be the one to carry the Slugs through a dismal shooting half (28% from the field), as she went into the locker room with 13 points, hitting 3 3-pointers to help the Slugs to an 8 point lead at the half. Calandri would add 7 more points in the second half to finish with 20. In the second half, Chabot helped the Slugs catch fire (55% from the field) as she went 3-3 from beyond the arc and 7-11 from the field, totaling 17 second half points. Chabot finished the game with a career high 24 points. Known for her 3pt. shooting, Jenna took over the paint against Jessup as she pulled down 9 rebounds (another career high); 6 of which were offensive.
All the pieces are starting to come together for the Slugs. With four key players that are putting up great numbers and a solid cast coming off the bench, these Slugs are looking to turn their season around. Though the Slugs have known it all season, this victory (now 5-12) proves on paper how much they have improved in just their second season with Head Coach Nikki Turner (4-20 last year).
The Slugs travel down south this weekend to face La Sierra on Friday and fellow DIII Independent Chapman University on Saturday.
