Slugs Team Attack Too Much for Warriors

Saturday, January 27, 2007 found the Team in high spirits with a well-deserved victory at home during the week and the hope of making it into a two game win streak.  The long trip into the Sacramento Valley played out favorably as the Slugs defeated the William Jessup Warriors, 53- 47.  With a disciplined and strong defensive attack, Head Coach Nikki Turner strategy proved to be too strong for the Warriors offense.  The Banana Slugs struggled in the first half offensively with 12 team turnovers.  Half time found the team down by one and in a great position to make the necessary adjustments.

Sophomores Melissa Junge, 9 points, 3 rebs, and 1 assist, and Kayleigh Calandri, 11 points, 5 rebs, and 1 steal, lead the post and guards in scoring.  Both players maintained an intense level of defensive pressure throughout the game.  The composure of the team in the closing minutes to execute and maintain ball pressure proved to be the deciding factor to the game.  This push was lead by Senior Captain Rachel Ocampo.  With a majority of her game total 10 points, 2 steals, 2 rebs, and 2 assists coming in the second half and key buckets by the rest of the team, the Slugs finished up the second half by going 7 for 11 from the free throw line.  All in all the performance was sound.  The Slugs head to Dallas for the first week of February and are looking to add to their win column.
