Slug Women's Basketball Continues Rollin'
The UC Santa Cruz Women's Basketball team came away with their fifth victory in a row last night at Dominican University in San Rafael. After finding themselves down 12 at the half and by as many as 15 in the second half, the Slugs rallied back, finishing on top with a 57-53 victory. With this win, the Slugs are now 9-14 overall for the season.
The Slugs first half was rocky, only shooting 29% from the field while Dominican shot 54%, sending them into half-time down 22-35. But the Slugs would not be defeated. In their last three victories, the Slugs found themselves down at half-time in each contest. Coming from behind is exactly what the Slugs have gotten accustomed too. The comback began with the hot shooting from Kayleigh Calandri. Cold through most of the game, Calandri found her shot halfway through the second half, finishing the game with 17 points and 6 rebounds, while shooting 50% from the 3-point line. Melissa Junge was also key to the Slugs comeback. With her 6 offensive rebounds and key blocks down the stretch, Junge finished the game with 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists.
Dominican had four players finish in the double figures. Michelle Cassilagio finished with 15, Chardonnay Nelson finished with 12, and both Ashley Fromm and Alisha Flatten dropped in 10 a piece bringing Domincan to 15-11 on the season.
Next for the Slugs is a double-header with the men's team at Menlo College (20-2) on Saturday, February 10th at 5:30pm.
