WATERTOWN, WI -- UC Santa Cruz started their two game swing through the state of Wisconsin on Saturday as they took fellow NCAA Division III independent Maranatha Baptist University. The Banana Slugs started strong and won the game 77-40 over the host Sabercats.
UC Santa Cruz was coming off a 57-34 win over Bethesda University of California last Saturday in Santa Cruz and Maranatha Baptist lost their last game 54-51 to Moody Bible Institute on Thursday in Watertown.
In the first half, the Sabercats would jump out to a 9-4 lead with 17:24 left after a Lexi Johnson free throw. From there, the Banana Slugs would go on a 10-0 run capped by an Erin Joo jumper to make the score 14-9 with 15:10 left in the half. The Banana Slugs would gain a double digit lead at 32-21 on a Kim Tom layup with 4:20 left in the half. The Banana Slugs' largest lead of the half would be sixteen, at 39-23, with thirty two seconds left on a Joo layup. The Banana Slugs would lead 39-23 at the halftime intermission.
Leah Parrish had a double double with seventeen points and eleven rebounds. Emily Hinsenkamp had a game high eighteen points for the Sabercats. Erin Joo had thirteen points and Ashley Holmes had eleven points. Stacie Ross had a double double with ten points and a game high ten rebounds for the Sabercats.
The Banana Slugs shot 42% (34-81) from the field, 18.8% (3-16) from the three point line and was 42.9% (6-14) from the free throw line. The Sabercats shot 29.1% (16-55) from the field, 0% (0-6) from the three point line and 66.67% (8-12) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced twenty eight Sabercat turnovers scoring twenty nine points off the turnovers while the Sabercats' defense forced eleven turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring eight points off the turnovers. UC Santa Cruz outrebounded Maranatha Baptist 52-43 and the Banana Slugs had thirty eight more points in the paint (64-26) than did the Sabercats.
The next game for the Banana Slugs will be tomorrow as they take on Mount Mary University in Milwaukee. Tipoff is set for 11 am.
