Banana Slugs Top Vikings in Thriller

SANTA CRUZ (11-22) – The Banana Slugs played their second game in as many days as they took Augustana College at Kaiser Permanente Arena. The Banana Slugs came back from a double digit deficit to defeat the Vikings 59-56.

In their last contest, UC Santa Cruz lost 70-65 to Concordia College in Santa Cruz last night while the Vikings won and Augustana won 62-58 over Concordia College in Santa Cruz on Friday.

In the first quarter, the Banana Slugs jumped out to a 6-2 lead, after an Ashley Holmes jumper, with 8:34 left in the quarter. The Banana Slugs would take their largest lead of the ballgame at seven, at 13-6, on a Michelle Poole three pointer, with 6:10 remaining in the quarter. The Vikings would then go on a 12-4 quarter ending run, capped by an Olivia Mayer layup with thirty three seconds left, to tie the score at 17-17. The two teams were tied at 17-17 heading into the second quarter.

For the first half of the second quarter, the two teams would play back and forth basketball. After the game was tied at 24-24, the Vikings would go on an 11-3 quarter-ending run, capped by a Marissa Pezzopane buzzer beater, to make the score 35-27. The Vikings would lead 35-27 at the halftime intermission.

In the third quarter, the Vikings would extend their lead to double digits at ten, at 37-27, on a Pezzopane jumper with 9:36 left in the quarter. Their ten point lead was the largest of the ballgame. The Banana Slugs would crawl their way back into the ballgame and would tie the game at 39-39 on a Madison Van Zandt layup with 5:55 left in the quarter. The Banana Slugs would take the lead at 42-41, with 3:04 left in the quarter, on a Tyler Stewart three pointer. The Banana Slugs would lead 47-46 at the end of the third quarter.  

In the fourth quarter, the Vikings would take the lead at 48-47 on a Pezzopane layup with 9:16 left in the game. The Vikings would expand their lead to five, at 54-49, on a Victoria Allen layup with 7:13 left in the game. The Banana Slugs would get their way back into the game and would take the lead for good at 58-56 on a Lashay Alexander layup with 1:38 left. The Vikings would have two chances to tie the game but each shot missed. After Alexander was set to the free throw line and hit one to make the score 59-56, the Vikings would have one final chance. However, Pezzopane's potential game-tying three pointer was missed to give the Banana Slugs a 59-56 win.

Alexandra had fifteen points to lead the Banana Slugs. Pezzopane had a game high sixteen points for the Vikings. Poole had thirteen points in the win. Three players (Kaycee Kallenberger, Mayer, and Corrie Reiley) had eight points apiece for the Vikings.

The Banana Slugs shot 33.3% (24-72) from the field, 30.4% (7-23) from the three point line and was 50% (4-8) from the free throw line. The Vikings shot 31% (22-71) from the field, 11.1% (2-18) from the three point line and 90.9% (10-11) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced sixteen Cobber turnovers scoring thirteen points off the turnovers while the Vikings' defense forced fifteen turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring eleven points off the turnovers. UC Santa Cruz outrebounded Augustana 51-50 and had five more second chance points (18-13) than did the Vikings.

The next game for the Banana Slugs will be on Friday as they take on Austin College at West Field House. Tip off is set for 7 pm.
