THOUSAND OAKS (12-27) – The Banana Slugs played only their fourth game on the road as they took on California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. The game against the Regals was a part of the CLU Thousand Oaks Inn Classic. The Banana Slugs only scored fifteen points as the Regals won 73-52.
In their last game, UC Santa Cruz lost 80-61 to Chapman University in Santa Cruz on Monday while the Regals defeated Pacific University in Thousand Oaks on Monday.
In the first quarter, the Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the ballgame at two, at 2-0, on a Trina Torres layup with 9:10 left. The Regals would take the lead for good, at 5-4, on a Sofia Cruz jumper with 7:59 left in the first. The Regals would expand their lead to double digits, at 17-6, on a Cruz jumper with 1:41 left in the quarter. The Regals led 21-6 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the closest that the Banana Slugs would get was thirteen, at 21-8, on a Torres layup with 9:51 left in the half. The Regals would gain their largest lead of the half at twenty one, at 31-10, on a Janelle Porter layup with 3:22 left in the half. The Banana Slugs would outscore the Regals 5-3 over the remaining time left as the Regals led 34-15 at the halftime break.
In the third quarter, the Regals would expand upon their lead. The Banana Slugs would come as close as fifteen on two occasions; the second occasion coming at 40-25 on a Lashay Alexander jumper with 6:56 left in the quarter. The Regals would gain their largest lead of the quarter at thirty-one, at 59-28, on a Kiana Gray layup with eight seconds left in the quarter. The Regals finished the quarter leading 59-28.
In the fourth quarter, the Regals would gain their largest of the ballgame at thirty three, at 61-28, on a pair of Tatiana Dunlap free throws with 9:13 left. The Banana Slugs would come as close as eighteen on two occasions; the second occasion coming at 70-52 on a Katie Young layup with 1:18 left. The Regals won the ballgame 73-52, sending the Banana Slugs to their third consecutive defeat.
Young had twelve points to lead the Banana Slugs. Cruz had a game high thirteen points for the Regals. Tyler Stewart had nine points in the loss. Porter had nine points for the Regals.
The Banana Slugs shot 33.9% (21-62) from the field, 15% (3-20) from the three-point line and was 70% (7-20) from the free throw line. The Regals shot 38.5% (25-65) from the field, 53.8% (7-13) from the three-point line and 69.6% (16-23) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced twenty six Regal turnovers scoring twenty five points off the turnovers while the Regals' defense forced eighteen turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring thirteen points off the turnovers. California Lutheran outrebounded UC Santa Cruz 43-42 while the Banana Slugs had four more points in the paint (34-30) than did the Regals.
The Banana Slugs will play their final game of the calendar year tomorrow as they take on Pacific Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks in their final game of the CLU Thousand Oaks Inn Classic. Game time is set for 4 pm.
