Slugs go cold in second half; fall at Simpson 70-59.

UC Santa Cruz couldn't maintain their hot start and lost 70-59 at Simpson University Friday night.

The Slugs fall to 10-9 and lost against Simpson for the first time since Feb. 3 2011. Simpson improved to 9-13.
The Slugs started hot, jumping out to a 9-0 lead after hitting their first four shots. The Redhawks fought back with a 17-4 run over the last 5:15 to take a four-point lead at the end of the first quarter.
The next two quarters had 10 lead changes and five ties as the teams went back and forth.
In the final quarter, Simpson pulled away with a 10-3 run to build a 59-49 lead with 5:19 left. The Redhawks kept control the rest of the game to get the win.

Freshman Madison Van Zandt led the Slugs with 13 points, 7 rebounds and tied her career-high with five blocks. Michelle Poole added 10 points.

Esther Wofford had 20 points for Simpson and 9 rebounds. Kelsie Jurin had 15 points and four of the Redhawks' 11 steals.

UCSC shot 42.9% from the field (24-56) but just 39.1% (9-23) from the free-throw line. Simpson shot 36.6% (26-71) from the field and 77.8% (14-18) from the free-throw line. UCSC was outrebounded 44-42 and committed 20 turnovers compared to Simpson's 15.

The Slugs next play Saturday night at Pacific Union in Angwin.
