In front of family and alumni, the UCSC Banana Slugs defeated William Jessup University 64-51 Saturday afternoon. UCSC improved to 13-9 on the season in the final home game for seniors Lashay Alexander, Jean Dulay, Ashley Holmes, Amanda Spence and Trina Torres.
It was the 62nd win for the senior class, surpassing the record of 61 set by the class of 2015.
The game started with a literal huge basket. Spence made her first appearance since February 2013 and hit a three-pointer to huge applause 15 seconds in. Jessup slowly fought back to take their only lead of the game at 6-5. The game was tied at 10 when the Slugs went on a 12-0 run to take a lead they would never relinquish.
Trailing by ten at halftime and the end of third quarter, Jessup cut into the lead in the final quarter, taking the deficit all the was to five with four minutes left from back-to-back jumpers from Rona Chavez.
Freshman Jenna Sparks then took control of the game, scoring the next ten UCSC points and pushing the lead to 11.
The Slugs shot 37.3 (22-59) from the field and held Jessup to 29% (16-55). Sparks finished with a career-high 15 points on 6-7 shooting to go with six rebounds. Michelle Poole and Jasmin Dimson both scored 13 points to match season-highs. Torres had a team-high seven rebounds. Kim Tom had a season-high 5 assists.
Jessup was led by Chavez with 14 points.
The Slugs close out the regular season with a pair of road games next week at NCAA Div. II San Francisco State and NAIA Cal Maritime.
