This Week: The Banana Slugs drew University of Texas-Tyler in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball National Championship. The first round begins on Friday and the Banana Slugs-Patriots match-up is on Friday at 5:30 pm (PST).

Scouting the Banana Slugs: UC Santa Cruz won the Great South Athletic Conference tournament championship with a 15-11 overall record. Senior Ashley Holmes leads the Banana Slugs in scoring with 9.6 points per game.

Scouting the Patriots: The Patriots clinched the American Southwest Conference regular season and postseason championships with a 27-1 overall record and a 15-0 record in conference play. Junior Michelle Obach leads the Eagles in scoring at 18.1 points per game.

Last Time Out: This is the first meeting between the two schools this season. They have one common opponent in Austin College. The Roos defeated the Banana Slugs 62-54 on November 27th, 2015 in Santa Cruz as a part of the UC Santa Cruz Thanksgiving Classic. The Patriots lost to the Roos 82-73 on December 19th, 2015.

National Appearances: This is UC Santa Cruz's first trip to the National Tournament. This is Texas-Tyler's third appearance in the National Tournament. They have a 3-2 record in their prior appearances.

Getting To Know University of Texas-Tyler: It was founded in 1971 as Tyler State College. It was renamed as Texas Eastern University in 1975 and then joined the University of Texas System in 1979.

About The Coaches:

Todd Kent is in his sixth year of coaching women's basketball at UC Santa Cruz. Prior to UC Santa Cruz, Kent was an assistant with Seattle University. He was also the head coach at La Salle High School in Yakima, Washington.

Kendra Hassell is in her first year coaching at Texas-Tyler. Prior to her time with the Patriots, she was an assistant for two seasons with Abilene Christian University.
