UC Santa Cruz can't corral Broncos in 85-39 loss

SANTA CLARA- Shaking off rust from finals, UC Santa Cruz fell to Division-I Santa Clara University 85-39 Sunday afternoon.

The Banana Slugs dropped to 3-5.

UCSC was facing their first Division I opponent since a loss 12/9/91 at San Francisco. The Broncos (4-3) shot 50% from the field (34-68) and had a 52-32 advantage on the boards.

Down 24 at halftime, the Slugs kept playing the role of pesky visitors, and forced a couple Bronco turnovers in the seven minutes after halftime while holding their hosts to just four made shots. Santa Clara however went on a 20-0 run over 6:30 in the third and fourth quarters to ice the game.

"We played hard," said head coach Todd Kent. "I was proud of the way we battled."

Michelle Poole led UCSC in scoring with nine points and ten rebounds, her third-straight game with double-digit boards. Katie Young added six points, three assists and a steal.

Marie Bertholdt led four Broncos in double-figure scoring with 18 points.

The Banana Slugs return to action with a two-game SoCal roadtrip begining Thursday at Chapman.
