SANTA CRUZ (2-17) – UC Santa Cruz played their final home game of the regular season as they took on NCCAA member Bethesda University of California at Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz. The game marked Senior Night as the Banana Slugs honored their seniors and they did so in style as they won 92-57.
In their last game, the Banana Slugs lost 60-54 to NAIA member William Jessup University in Rocklin on Tuesday while the Flames won 58-43 over Saint Katherine College in San Dimas on Monday.
In the first quarter, the Banana Slugs would start the quarter on a 13-3 run capped by a Michelle Poole layup with 5:07 left in the quarter. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the quarter at twelve, at 20-8, on an Annie Susco jumper with 1:02 left in the quarter. The Flames would come as close as eight, at 20-12, on a pair of Taylor Smalley free throws with six seconds left in the quarter. The Banana Slugs led 20-12 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Banana Slugs would expand their lead. The closest the Flames would come would be nine, at 21-12, with 9:56 left in the half. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the quarter at twenty five, at 44-19, on a pair of Katie Young free throws.
In the third quarter, the Flames would come as close as twenty six on two occasions; the second occasion at 49-23 on a Victoria Jackson jumper with 7:50 left in the quarter. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the quarter at thirty three, at 68-35, on a Tyler Stewart three pointer with twelve seconds left in the quarter. The three by Stewart marked the 100th in her career. The Banana Slugs led 68-35 at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Flames would come as close as twenty four, at 77-53, on a Brianna Davis jumper with 3:46 left. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the ballgame at thirty five, at 92-57, on a Suhansi Perera three-pointer with twenty seconds left. The win marked the fifth consecutive season the Banana Slugs garnered fourteen or more wins in a season.
Stewart had a game-high twenty points to lead the Banana Slugs. Adelina Vanaga had twelve points for the Flames. Poole had seventeen, Jasmin Dimson had twelve and Katie Young had ten in the win. DQ Townsend had eleven points and Davis and Jackson had nine points apiece.
The Banana Slugs shot 53.3% (32-60) from the field, 43.8% (14-32) from the three-point line and were 73.7% (14-19) from the free throw line. The Flames shot 27.5% (22-80) from the field, 7.7% (2-26) from the three-point line and 64.7% (11-17) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced twelve Flame turnovers scoring sixteen points off the turnovers while the Flames' defense forced fourteen turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring seven points off the turnovers. UC Santa Cruz outrebounded Bethesda 47-45 and had nineteen more points off the bench (28-9) than did the Flames.
The Banana Slugs will now wait to see if they make the 2017 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship. The field will be announced on February 27th at 11:30 am.
