Athenas Defeat Banana Slugs

CLAREMONT (1-5) – UC Santa Cruz continued their road trip as they took on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Claremont. The Athenas used a 17-3 second quarter to defeat the Banana Slugs 63-44.

Both teams won their last game. The Banana Slugs won 71-51 to Hamline College in Las Vegas on Saturday while the Athenas won 81-61 over University of La Verne on Wednesday in La Verne.

The Athenas started the first quarter on a 15-3 run capped by a Kate Parrish layup with 4:35 left in the quarter. The Banana Slugs would come as close as four on two occasions; the second at 17-13 on a Jenna Sparks layup with fifty-one seconds. 

In the second quarter, the Banana Slugs would come as close as one, at 17-16, on a CJ Catina three pointer with 9:28 left in the half. From that point, the Athenas went on a 17-0 half ending run, capped by a Lindsey Cleary jumper with five seconds left, for a 34-16 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Athenas gained their largest lead of the ballgame at twenty four, at 44-20, with 4:37 left in the quarter. The Banana Slugs would come as close as fifteen, at 48-33, on an Alaina Alvarez three pointer with thirty seven seconds left in the quarter. The Athenas led 48-33 at the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Athenas would hold the Banana Slugs at arms' length. The Banana Slugs would come as close as eleven, at 51-40, on a Katie Young three pointer with 7:23 left. The Athenas would gain their largest lead of the quarter at nineteen, at 63-44, with forty six seconds left on a Teeana Contangco layup.

Young had a game-high fifteen points to lead the Banana Slugs.  Kim Tom had eleven points and Suhansi Perera, off the bench, had seven points in the loss. Parrish, off the bench, had fourteen points for the Athenas.

The Banana Slugs shot 28.8% (15-52) from the field, 34.8% (8-23) from the three-point line and 66.7% (6-9) from the free throw line. The Athenas shot 43.3% (26-60) from the field, 44.4% (4-9) from the three-point line and 58.3% (7-12) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced ten Athena turnovers, scoring eighteen points off the turnovers while the Athenas' defense forced ten turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring ten points off the turnovers. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps outrebounded UC Santa Cruz 48-27 and had thirty more points in the paint (40-10) than did the Banana Slugs.

The Banana Slugs will now have eighteen days off before their next game January 23rd as they take on NAIA member CSU Maritime Academy in Vallejo at 5:30 pm.
