Big nights from Kowack, Stephenson lead UCSC to 63-54 victory

UC Santa Cruz used a 20-9 second quarter to take control of a close game in a 63-54 win over Lewis & Clark Saturday night at the UCSC Thanksgiving Classic.

The Banana Slugs improved to 2-2 with the home win.

"I'm proud of the leadership from our upperclassman and how well and how hard they played. Excited to watch the freshman grow each game defensively and offensively," said head coach Todd Kent.

Freshman Ashley Kowack led the Banana Slugs with 23 points, including 6-of-13 on three-pointers. Katilin Stephenson had 11 points with team-highs of 14 rebounds 7 assists and 5 blocks before fouling out.
Lewis & Clark (1-2) was led by forward Deisie Johnson's 14 points and 13 rebounds, but were stifled by the Banana Slugs' defense in hitting just 13-53 from the field (24.5%) and committing 22 turnovers.

"We're still working on figuring out rotations & substitution patterns and that's part of a work in progress," Kent said. "I am just really excited about future."

The two teams had 4 lead changes and three ties in the first quarter, but UCSC closed the second quarter on a 10-2 run while holding the Pioneers to just 2 field goals in the period to push their lead to 37-25 at the half. They then stymied every run in the second half by the visitors to grind out the win.

CJ Catina added 10 points off the bench Savannah Henson added 3 steals to go with 7 points.
