SANTA CRUZ (12-17) – UC Santa Cruz wrapped up their time at the Hyatt December Classic as they took on University of Redlands at Kaiser Permanente Arena. The Banana Slugs defeated the Bulldogs 65-48.
In the first quarter, the Bulldogs started the game on a 6-2 spurt capped by a Camille Mosley jumper with 4:36 left in the quarter. The four point lead was the largest of the contest for the Bulldogs. The Banana Slugs would go on a 8-2 run, capped by an Ashley Kowack three pointer with 1:10 left in the quarter, to take the lead at 10-8. The two teams were tied at 10-10 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the two teams traded baskets, and the lead, back and forth for the first two minutes and four seconds of clock time. The Banana Slugs would gain the lead for good, at 15-14, on a pair of CJ Catina free throws with 7:56 left, and would take a double-digit lead, at 27-17, on a Kaitlin Stephenson free throw with 3:54 left in the half. The Banana Slugs led 33-23 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Banana Slugs would expand their lead. The closest the Bulldogs would come would be eight, at 37-29, on a Cassandra Lacey free throw with 7:11 left in the quarter. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the quarter at sixteen, at 47-31, on a Savannah Henson jumper with 3:25 left in the quarter. The Banana Slugs would lead 50-35 at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Banana Slugs would continue to add to their advantage. The Bulldogs would come as close as thirteen, at 50-37, on a Brenna De La Rosa jumper with 8:23 left. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the ballgame at twenty-two, at 65-43, on a CJ Catina three-pointer with 2:32 left.
Catina and Kowack both had nineteen points to lead the Banana Slugs. Catina had four three-pointers to go to 7th on the school career list. Lacey had a game-high twenty-six points for the Bulldogs. Henson had nine points, and Kaylee Murphy and Kaitlin Stephenson each scored five in the win. Alyssa Downs had twelve points for the Bulldogs.
The Banana Slugs shot 37.7% (23-61) from the field, 34.8% (8-23) from the three-point line and were 55% (11-20) from the free throw line. The Bulldogs shot 32.8% (20-61) from the field, 8.3% (1-12) from the three-point line and 46.7% (7-15) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced thirteen Bulldogs turnovers, scoring nine points off the turnovers while the Bulldogs' defense forced fourteen turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring eight points off the turnovers. UC Santa Cruz outrebounded University of Redlands 46-40 and the Banana Slugs had eight more points in the paint (22-14) than did the Bulldogs.
The next game for the Banana Slugs will be Friday as they will take on Williams College at Kaiser Permanente Arena. Tip-off is set for 6 pm.
