SANTA CRUZ (1-24) – UC Santa Cruz played their second game of a three game homestand as they took on NAIA member Pacific Union College at Kaiser Permanente Arena. Every player that played scored for the Banana Slugs in the 75-38 win.
In the first quarter, the two teams were tied at 2-2 with 8:21 left in the quarter. The Banana Slugs would take the lead for good, at 5-2, on a Ashley Kowack three pointer with eight minutes left in the quarter. The Banana Slugs would take a double digit lead, at 14-3, on a CJ Catina three pointer with 4:13 left in the quarter. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the quarter at sixteen, at 25-9, after a pair of Maddie Brauer free throws with ten seconds left in the quarter. The Banana Slugs led 25-13 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Banana Slugs' lead would grow. The Banana Slugs started the quarter on an 8-1 run, capped by a Catina layup, to extend their lead to 33-14. The closest the Banana Slugs would come would be thirteen, at 34-21, on a Faith Williams layup with 5:15 left in the half. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the half at twenty-two, at 44-22, on a Catina layup with 1:39 left in the half. The Banana Slugs led 46-25 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Banana Slugs would hold the Pioneers at arms' length. The closest the Pioneers would come would be nineteen, at 46-27, on an Elissa Root layup with 9:00 left in the quarter. The Banana Slugs gained their largest lead of the quarter at thirty-two, at 63-31, on a Savannah Henson free throw with twenty-three seconds left in the quarter. The Banana Slugs led 63-31 at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Banana Slugs would hold the Pioneers at bay. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the game at thirty-seven, at 68-31, on a Kowack three pointer with 8:26 left. The closest the Pioneers would come would be thirty-four, at 72-38, on a Marielle Tuazon layup with 2:50 left.
The win was the third in a row for the Banana Slugs.
Kaylee Murphy had a double double with a game high sixteen points and twelve rebounds. Root and Tuazon both had eleven points for the Pioneers. Catina and Kowack both had nine in the win. Faith Williams had six points for the Pioneers.
The Banana Slugs shot 39.2% (29-74) from the field, 24.1% (7-29) from the three-point line and were 47.6% (10-21) from the free throw line. The Pioneers shot 28.3% (15-53) from the field, 11.1% (1-9) from the three-point line and 53.8% (7-13) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced twenty-four Pioneers' turnovers scoring twenty-nine points off the turnovers while the Pioneers' defense forced fifteen turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring twelve points off the turnovers. UC Santa Cruz outrebounded Pacific Union 54-37 and the Banana Slugs had thirty-four more bench points (40-6) than did the Pioneers.
The next game for the Banana Slugs will be Saturday as they take on University of Saint Katherine at Kaiser Permanente Arena. Game time is set for 2 pm.
