SEGUIN (9-12) - Three freshmen had the best rounds for the Banana Slugs of the Lady Bulldog Classic as UC Santa Cruz traveled to the Lone Star State for their first event of the season.
In the first round, freshman Kylie Edwards led the Banana Slugs with an 86 (+14) which tied her for 29th along with Piper Gleadhill of Schreiner University, Kelsie Guinn of Hardin-Simmons University, Delaney Kelley of Trinity University, Kaley Martin of Texas Lutheran, Amber Overhultz of Concordia University (TX) and Reygan Rodriguez of Schreiner. Sarah Shi and Sean Hong both shot an 89 (+17) which tied them for 39th along with Halie Lewis of Texas Lutheran and Emily Ming of Mary Hardin-Baylor University. Julia Martin shot a 93 (+21) which tied her for 45th along with Bailey Bowen of Texas Lutheran and Rachael Green of LeTourneau University. Jessica Salazar and Maia Dupuis both shot a first round score of 96 (+24) which tied them for 48th along with Tannah Salinas of Texas Lutheran. Victoria Morales rounded out the Banana Slugsâ€™ contingent with a score of 99 (+27) which placed her in 51st.
In the second round, Shi gained the lowest score for the Banana Slugs as she shot an 89 (+17). Edwards shot a 92 (+20). Edwards and Shi finished with a two-round total of 178 (+34) to finish tied for 39th. Hong shot a second round 95 for a two round total of 184 (+40) which placed her tied for 46th along with Kristin Laird of Texas Lutheran. Salazar shot 90 (+18) for a total score of 186 (+42) which placed her in 48th. Dupuis shot 92 (+20) for a total score of 188 (+44) which gave her a 49th place finish. Morales also shot a 92 for her second round score for a total of 191 (+47) which placed her in 50th place.
Casey Washmon of Mary Hardin-Baylor won the individual competition. Mary Hardin-Baylor won the team competition while UC Santa Cruz finished ninth in the team competition.
The next time the Banana Slugs will be on the links is September 17th-18th at the California State Intercollegiate at Olivia Links Golf Club in Ventura.
