CANBY, ORE (10-8) - The Banana Slugs traveled to Oregon to take part in the Culturame Classic. The Banana Slugs' competition featured eight NCAA Division III schools.
Kristin Elich of George Fox University won the individual competition in a playoff. George Fox won the team competition while UC Santa Cruz finished sixth in the team competition.
This was the final tournament of the calendar year for the Banana Slugs.
In the first round, Jessica Salazar shot an 89 (+17) which tied her for 24th. Sarah Shi shot a 95 (+23) which tied her with Hannah Thornburg of Pacific University. Julia Martin shot a first round score of 96 (+24). Kylie Edwards shot a 97 (+25) which tied her along with Tori Eichten of Redlands. Sean Hong shot a first round 99 (+27) which tied her with Elizabeth Moretti of Lewis & Clark and Tiana Yamaoka of Linfield. Victoria Morales rounded out the Banana Slugs on the day with a score of 104 (+32).
In the second round, Salazar took three shots off her score for an 86 (+14) for a total tournament score of 175 (+31) and tied for a 24th place finish. Edwards shot a second round 90 (+18) for a two-round total of 187 (+43) which placed her in 31st. Shi shot a 93 (+21) for a total score of 188 (+44) which placed her in 32nd along with Eichten. Hong shot a 94 (+22) for a total score of 193 (+49) which placed her in 36th. Julia Martin shot a second round 103 (+31) for a total score of 199 (+55) which tied her for 39th along Janie Kiyokawa of Pacific. Morales shot 106 (+34) for a total score of 210 (+66) for a 43rd place finish.
Overall, the Slugs imrpoved 17 shots from the first round and moved up one place.
"Jessica Salazar had a good tournament, said head coach Paulette Pera. "Almost everybody got better the second round. That was our goal, I'm real happy we accomplished that.
"The golf course was really tight so even a slightly missed shot was in the trees or water. This fall portion of our golf season everyone shot their personal best, I can't ask for much for than that."
