TURLOCK (10-17) – Stanislaus State scored five second half goals to defeat UC Santa Cruz 6-0 in Turlock. The match is the third of a season long six consecutive road matches for the Banana Slugs.
In their last match, the Banana Slugs lost 2-0 to Chapman University in Orange on Monday while the Warriors tied Cal Poly Pomona 2-2 in Turlock on Saturday.
In the first half, the Warriors would strike quickly. Just ninety seconds into the match, Kirsten Coleman scored on a near post shot after a corner kick to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. For the remainder of the half, the Banana Slugs attacked. Cayce Shaw had a shot on frame with just under two minutes remaining in the half but the shot was saved. The Warriors led 1-0 at halftime.
In the second half, the Warriors' offense attacked early and often. With 41:15 left in the match, Mikayla Clifford scored from the top of the box to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead. With 33:34 left in the match, Coleman hit a shot into the back of the net from just inside the 15 yard line to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead. Just over two minutes later, Clifford scored on a shot from just outside the box to give the Warriors a 4-0 lead. With 25:25 remaining, Gabriela Vargas scored on a header to give the Warriors a 5-0 lead. Just over a minute later, the Warriors would add their final tally on a Gabby Squarcia goal from just inside the box to give the Warriors a 6-0 lead. The Warriors won the match 6-0.
Megan Carey and Shaw both had a shot apiece to lead the Banana Slugs and Clifford had a match high three shots for the Warriors. The win for the match went to Chelsea Lewandowski for the Warriors and the loss went to Athena Del Rosario for UC Santa Cruz. Stanislaus State had a 17-2 advantage in shots and a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Banana Slugs will have nine days between matches. Their next match is October 26th as they take on University of Redlands in Redlands. The match is set to start at 4 pm.
