REDLANDS (10-26) – The Banana Slugs and Bulldogs played an incredibly tight match in Redlands but in the end, it was the Bulldogs that would come away with a 2-1 win.
In their last match, the Banana Slugs lost 6-0 to NCAA Division II member Stanislaus State University in Turlock on October 17th while the Bulldogs defeated Chapman University 3-0 in Redlands on Saturday.
In the first half, the two teams would play an even match for the first eleven minutes. The Bulldogs would strike first on a Savannah Laursen rebound to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead with 33:22 left in the half. The rest of the half was played in a back and forth pace but neither team could find the back of the net. The Bulldogs would lead 1-0 at the halftime intermission.
The second half started out just like the first half. The Bulldogs would extend their lead to 2-0 on a Laursen goal with 34:28 remaining in the match. Through the next half hour of clock time, the two teams would play back and forth soccer. With 1:44 left in the match, Joelle Steichen scored to cut the Redlands lead in half to 2-1. The Bulldogs would win the match 2-1.
Steichen had three shots to lead the Banana Slugs and McKenzie Oliger had a match high eight shots for the Bulldogs. The win for the match went to Hannah Menk for the Bulldogs and the loss went to Athena Del Rosario for UC Santa Cruz. Redlands had a 26-6 advantage in shots and a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Banana Slugs will have their next match on Friday as they take on Mills College in Oakland. The match is set to start at 3 pm.
