In a season of firsts in UCSC's debut season in the Great South Athletic Conference, defender Rika Goto won some memorable hardware.
The senior from Petaluma was named conference Player of the Year in a vote by the Great South head coaches.
She started every game for UCSC this season switching from winger to centerback, and marshaled a backline that gave up under two goals/game despite a brutal schedule that included three Division II teams.
"Rika is one of our hardest working players and a fierce leader with a passion for the game," said head coach Emily Scheese.
"This is a well-deserved award for a very humble player who strives for the best for her teammates every minute on and off the field."
Rika was one of six Banana Slugs on the 22-player All-Conference team. Also honored were Megan Carey, Selina Olivera-Davila, Claire Lim, Kacie Ring and Emily Vanasse.
The Slugs go for team glory when they play in the Conference semifinals against host Agnes Scott Saturday morning
