THOUSAND OAKS (9-26) – UC Santa Cruz played their first match of a three match road trip as they took on California Lutheran University. The two teams played evenly through the course of regulation, but the Regals would score in the first overtime to defeat the Banana Slugs 1-0.
In their last match, the Banana Slugs won 2-1 over Berry College in Santa Cruz on September 17th while the Regals tied Pomona-Pitzer 1-1 in Thousand Oaks on Saturday.
In the first half, the two teams played even soccer with neither team getting an advantage on the other on the offensive end. The Banana Slugs had one more shot (5-4) than did the Regals in the first half. The final chance for the Banana Slugs to score in the half was a shot by Claire Lim that was saved by Regals' goalkeeper Stacy Choate-Ciletti. The two teams went into the halftime break tied at 0-0.
The second half provided more of the same. The Regals had a two shot advantage (8-6) over the Banana Slugs in the second half of play. The final chance for either team to get on the scoreboard before the end of regulation was a shot by the Banana Slugs' Alex Arce that went just wide. The Banana Slugs and Regals finished regulation tied at 1-1.
In the first overtime session, the Banana Slugs would get a header by Megan Carey with 5:43 left in the extra frame. With 1:43 left, the Regals would score on a Ryley Settles shot that was into the top of the net that was just out of the reach of Athena Del Rosario. The Regals won 1-0.
Carey had three shots to lead the Banana Slugs while for California Lutheran, Bri Pinal had a match high four shots. Choate-Ciletti got the win for the Regals while Del Rosario got the loss for the Banana Slugs. The Regals outshot the Banana Slugs 13-12 and the Regals had one more corner kick (5-4) than did the Banana Slugs.
The next match for the Banana Slugs will be Friday as they take on NCAA Division II member CSU East Bay in Hayward. Kickoff is set for 7 pm.
