NEWBERG (9-7) – The Banana Slugs continued their season opening five-match road trip as they took on George Fox University in Newberg. The Bruins used three second half goals to defeat the Banana Slugs 3-0.
The first half was played at a back and forth pace. The Bruins had a slight advantage in shots at 2-1. The lone shot for the Banana Slugs came with 37:24 left in the half off the foot of Izel Gutierrez that was saved by Bruins' goal Kelsey Kammerzell.
In the second half, the momentum swung George Fox's way. With 35:36 left, Chloe Shumaker scored on a free kick just beyond the arc to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead. Just over two minutes of clock time later, Savannah Moisan scored after a pass from Shumaker to give the Bruins a 2-0 advantage. The final chance for the Banana Slugs to score was on a shot by Tomiko Hoshjima but the shot was blocked. The Bruins would add their final tally of the afternoon off the foot of Megan Harrington after a cross by Michala Denn with 14:38 left.
Gutierrez and Hoshjima had one shot apiece to lead the Banana Slugs while for George Fox, Moisan had a match high three shots apiece. The Bruins outshot the Banana Slugs 12-2 and the Bruins had nine more corner kicks (9-0) than did the Banana Slugs.
The Banana Slugs will wrap up their road trip tomorrow as they take on Lewis and Clark College in Portland.
