SANTA CRUZ (10-27) –UC Santa Cruz made their return home a fabulous one, scoring six goals in the first half en route to a 8-0 win over the Mills Cyclones.
The Banana Slugs (4-12-1) had thirty more shots (31-1) than Mills, who fell to 3-11.
"It was a team effort today," said head coach Lauren Nadler. "Our freshman class played really well, and their talents were on display throughout the match."
In the first half, the Banana Slugs would get on the scoreboard with 37:26 left in the half on an Amelia Streiffer goal on an assist from Gaby Powell. Just over two minutes later, Streiffer stole the ball in the box and tapped the ball into the net at the near post to give the Banana Slugs a 2-0 lead. With 23:29 left in the half, Katie Schinnerer scored her first career goal heading home a corner kick by Alex Arce to give the Banana Slugs a 3-0 lead. With 15:50 left, Arce would score a goal of her own with a rocket from forty yards out off Kayla McCord's assist for a 4-0 lead. With 10:19 left in the half, the Banana Slugs would scored their fifth goal on Gwen Morier's shot off a pass from Natalie Filippi. With one minute left in the half, Ava Colasin scored on another breakaway after an assist by Filippi to give the Banana Slugs a 6-0 haltime lead.
In the second half, the Banana Slugs would score with 36:54 left on a Joelle Steichen free kick from thirty yards out to extend the Banana Slugs' lead to 7-0. With 13:44 left, Cayce Shaw would score the final tally of the match for the Banana Slugs from forty yards out for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Shaw had a match high eight shots to lead the Banana Slugs while for Mills, Amanda Padilla had one shot. Malia Starita got the win for the Banana Slugs. Skye Snyder got the loss for the Cyclones with 11 shots in her first appearance this year between the posts.
The Banana Slugs will wrap up the 2018 regular season on Thursday as they take on NAIA member Sierra Nevada College in Santa Cruz. Kickoff is set for noon.
