SANTA CRUZ-- The Women's Volleyball team gave a good effort against Division II Southern Oregon, winning the first game of the match before falling 29-31, 30-26, 30-18, 30-17 Monday night at the West Field House.
Freshman Middle-blocker Marisol Visalli led the Slugs with 12 kills, hitting .189 in her debut at the UCSC West Fieldhouse. Sophomores Amy Strang and Kristin Onorato both added 8, and Strang had a match-high 4 service aces.
Senior Setter Lily Hallock had 39 assists.
Kristin Matchett of Southern Oregon was dominant throughout the match. She recorded 21 kills and had a .405 kill percentage. Her 21 kills represented nearly 38% of Oregon's total offense.
UCSC, playing mostly Freshmen and Sophomores, showed its inexperience at times, giving up 17 service aces. Overall, however, Head Coach Jay Hosack was well-pleased with the effort.
The Slugs open their regular season this Saturday against Oregon Tech, another Division II team. They begin conference play September 20 at Bethany College. UCSC made the postseason for the first time in school history last year with an 11-4 record against the Cal Pac.
