Slugs Finish 1-1 in Southern California
LOS ANGELES, CA -- The UCSC Women's Volleyball team traveled down to southern California this past weekend to compete against Chapman and Occidental where they came out with their 4th victory this season.
On Friday night, the Slugs were in Orange to match up against DIII Independent Chapman University. These two teams faced each other earlier this season where the Slugs took Chapman to 5 games before eventually losing. But UCSC was unable to pull things together against a strong Chapman team as they fell to the Panthers in 3 games (22-30, 22-30, 25-30). Brina Mocsny lead the team with 12 kills hitting .360 and Amy Strang was right behind her with 11 kills hitting .229. Sophomore Libero Lauren Chiodini tallied 23 digs and 3 aces.
Without a days rest, the Slugs would take on a meager Occidental College Saturday night. UCSC dominated Occidental, winning easily in 3 games; 30-9, 30-16, 30-21. Head Coach Selene Teitlebaum was able to put everyone in the match as Sophomore rookie Lisa Kauchak shined recording 2 aces, 4 blocks, 10 kills and 1 error on 13 attempts to hit .692 overall. Briana Williford finished with 11 kills, 1 error on 15 attempts, hitting .667 overall, and threw in 3 blocks on the night as well. Sophomore Kate Wellmon also had a good night as she stepped in to set 34 assists and serve 2 aces.
The Slugs play two matches at home tomorrow, facing off against Menlo College at 4 pm and Vassar College at 7 pm.
