Uphill Battle at Pikes Peak, Stanislaus for Slugs
TURLOCK, CA -- The UCSC Women's Volleyball team traveled to CSU Stanislaus last night where they took the match to 5 games before losing 15-8 in the final game. Down 1-0 the Slugs fought back to win games 2 and 3 (30-23, 30-26), but Stanislaus pulled out a 33-31 victory in the 4th game to force a game 5. Marisol Visalli led the Slugs with 15 kills, Briana Wiliford added 12, and Jenna Tomei had 11. Jenna Koch led both teams with 49 assists on the night, while Andrea Wilson led the Slugs with 21 digs, and Jihan Spearman led both teams with 4 blocks.
Before this, the Slugs competed in the Pikes Peak challenge in Colorado Springs for their season opener. The Slugs took 2 of their matches to 5 games but weren't able to pull out a victory in the tournament. UCSC opened against Augustana College where the Slugs took them to 5 games, winning the second (32-30) and fourth game (30-25),but couldn't pull out the victory losing 15-10 in the 5th game. In the second game of the day the Slugs were up against Carleton College, ranked No. 17 in the Nation, the Slugs lost 3-0 (30-15, 30-23, 30-26).
On Saturday UCSC would face off against Wartburg College in 5 games where again they lost the fifth game 15-10. The last match of the tournament was against host Colorado College where the Slugs lost to the Tourament Champions in 3 games (30-22, 30-28, 30-21).
Over the four games of the tournament senior Brina Mocsny led the team in kills with 53, senior Briana Williford had 30, and sophomore Jihan Spearman added 30. Junior Jenna Koch led the team with 157 assists and 53 digs.
The Slugs will face Cal Lutheran at home this Friday at 5pm and on Saturday at 7pm.
