Slugs Finish Week With a Perfect 5-0 Record
The UCSC Women's Volleyball team started off the week with a solid win over the Bethany Bruins of Scotts Valley (25-9, 25-23, 25-16). Leading the Slugs was Senior Outside Hitter Megan Wisniewski who racked up 11 kills hitting .364 for the match.
UCSC then traveled down south to compete in the Cal-Lu-Fornia Volleyball Tournament hosted by Cal Lutheran University. First up was Claremont-Mudd-Scripps who were defeated by the Slugs in three straight sets (25-17, 26-24, 25-19). Leading the way for the Slugs were their Outside Hitters, Megan Wisniewski and Katie English, who each tallied 10 kills for the match.
The Slugs then battled with Whitworth University who took them to five close games but ended up dropping the match to UCSC by two points (27-29, 26-24, 25-17, 25-27, 15-13). The kill leader for the match was Junior Outside Hitter Katie English who had 16 kills, 2 aces and 10 digs. Senior Outside Hitter Megan Wisnewski also contributed 13 kills and Junior Middle Blocker Jessica Flood had 10 kills and 4 blocks for the match. Junior Setter Amy Knight tallied 48 assists, 10 digs, 3 aces and 3 blocks to lead the Slugs to victory.
Santa Cruz then took down Redlands University in three straight sets (25-19, 25-23, 25-23). Junior Outside Hitter Katie English had a great match totaling an outstanding 20 kills (just 5 kills shy of the school record). To complete the perfect 5-0 week, the UCSC Women's Volleyball team defeated Pomona Pitzer in three straight sets (25-23, 25-14, 25-16). Once again, Junior Outside Hitter Katie English led with 15 kills followed by Senior Outside Hitter Megan Wisniewski who had 11 kills.
Next week, the Slugs play at CSU Monterey Bay, Menlo College and Holy Names College. Their first home game is on Saturday, September 27th at 3pm vs. Whittier College and 7pm vs. Cal State East Bay.
