UCSC Women's Volleyball Team Goes 4-1 For the Week
SANTA CRUZ, CA -- It was a big week for the Slugs starting out against 2008 CalPac Conference Champs, Menlo College on Wednesday, September 23rd. UCSC started out slow dropping the first two games 19-25, 18-25 only to rally back to win the next two sets 25-14, 25-19 to force the fifth and final game. The Slugs were down in the fifth game until 9-13 when they came back with an exciting 6 point run to win the match 15-13 with Senior Libero Dana Johnson serving. Senior Outside Hitter Jackie McCrory had an incredible match leading the offense with 17 kills, only two errors hitting .429 for the match. Freshman Middle Blocker Ginger Berryman had a season-high 9 blocks for the match and Senior Libero Dana Johnson had a season-high 6 aces in addition to 29 digs. Senior Defensive Specialists Sophie Manoukian and Rosie Borchert each contributed 12 digs to help the Slugs to victory.
UC Santa Cruz hosted the annual Slugfest Tournament this weekend starting out against West Coast Baptist College. The Slugs won in 3 (25-12-25-16, 25-13) with Senior Outside Hitters Jackie McCrory and Katie English leading with 8 kills each. The Slugs had an impressive offensive game hitting .329 overall and hitting .500 in game one.
Up next for the Slugs was Occidental College who came out strong taking the first set 25-23. After the first close game, the Slugs took control of the match winning in 4 (23-25, 25-10, 25-20, 25-9). Senior Outside Hitter Katie English led with 20 kills followed by Jackie McCrory and Jen Meyers who each added 12 kills for the match. Senior Libero Dana Johnson had a perfect passing game while adding 29 digs for the match.
On Saturday, September 26th the Slugs faced off with Luther College, both teams finishing 2-0 the previous day. UCSC took the first set coming from behind to win 25-23 only to drop the next set 15-25. The Slugs were down 15-21 in the third game and made an unbelievable ten point run with Senior Defensive Specialist Rosie Borchert serving to win 25-21. Game 4 the Slugs broke down losing 16-25 and an even more disappointing fifth set losing the match 4-15. This ended the Slugs seven match win streak while Luther College went 4-0 for the weekend.
The last match of the weekend was against La Sierra University. With all seven freshman for the Slugs on the court and all eight seniors cheering them on, they were able to win in 3 (25-12, 25-8, 25-8). Leading for UCSC, was Freshman Outside Hitter Chanel Filteau who racked up 9 kills hitting an impressive .571 for the match and added 4 aces off her jump serve as well as 5 digs. Freshman Outside Hitter Katherine Grow also had a solid match totaling 6 kills with no errors on 8 attempts hitting an even more impressive .750 for the game. Leading the defense was Freshman Defensive Specialist Melissa Stoll who had a season-high 6 aces as well as 5 digs for the match.
The Slugs improve to 14-3 on the season and will face Mills College on Tuesday, September 29th in Oakland at 7pm.
