Slugs Go 3-0 Against CalPac Teams This Week

 

SANTA CRUZ, CA --On Wednesday, September 16th, UCSC traveled to Scotts Valley to face cross-town rival, Bethany University. Despite a raucous crowd, the Slugs came out hot taking the first set 25-16. Bethany retaliated and got an early lead in the second set but after a huge comeback from UCSC, the Bruins were defeated 25-22. The third set was another impressive come from behind win into extra points finishing at 30-28 for the Slugs. It was Senior Opposite Jen Meyers who led the Slugs offense with 10 kills, only one error on 18 attempts, hitting an impressive .500 for the match.

 

On Friday, September 18th, UCSC traveled to Oakland to play NAIA Holy Names University. The Slugs battled with the Hawks, both teams fighting to gain momentum for the win. Every game was exciting with long rallies, big blocks, impressive digs and huge kills from both sides. The Slugs came out on top in the first set 25-19 then dropping the next two sets 22-25, 23-25. With their backs against the wall, the Slugs took game four 25-20 to force the fifth set. It was neck and neck in the final game tied at 7-7 when the Slugs won an extremely long and exciting rally to take the side switch 8-7. With momentum on their side, the Slugs fought to the finish to win the match 15-12.

 

Senior Outside Hitter Katie English led with 20 kills, 6 of which came in the fifth game at crucial moments, and also had 16 digs, one ace and one block. Senior Libero Dana Johnson had an epic match again joining the AVCA 30 Dig Club racking up a new personal best 37 digs in addition to three aces and one huge kill. Junior Middle Blocker Lauren Nixon had a great blocking game shutting down the Hawks lead scoring outside hitters five times and banging six kills for the match.

The last match for the week was against William Jessup University in Rocklin, CA on Saturday, September 19th. The first set was competitive against the Warriors with the Slugs inching out the win by only two points (25-23). Game two the Slugs started out slow being down 1-5 but fought to take the lead back at 10-8 taking advantage of unforced errors from the Warriors. UCSC went on a huge run winning a tremendously long rally to gain momentum for the second set win (25-13). Game three the Slugs played near perfect with no hitting errors for a team percentage of .438 to win the set 25-9. Senior Libero Dana Johnson had an excellent defensive game tallying 33 digs for the match once again joining the AVCA 30 Dig Club, as well has having a perfect passing game and serving up 3 aces. Offensively it was Senior Opposite Jen Meyers who led the Slugs with 7 kills and 1 block. Junior Middle Blocker Lauren Nixon had the highest hitting percentage going 5 for 10 and adding 3 blocks and 1 dig for the match. Senior Outside Hitter Katie English added 11 digs, 6 kills, and 5 aces (4 of which were in one serving run in the third game).

The UCSC Women's Volleyball Team is now 10-2 on the season and will play at Menlo College on Wednesday, September 23rd. The Slugs will host their own tournament this weekend playing at 1pm and 7pm on Friday, and 11am and 7pm on Saturday in the West Field House.
