Poets Sweep Banana Slugs

THOUSAND OAKS (9-12) – UC Santa Cruz finished their time at the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational as they took on Whittier College. The Poets held the Banana Slugs to a negative hitting percentage as they swept the Banana Slugs 3-0.

Both teams lost their last match. The Banana Slugs were swept 3-0 by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps earlier today while the Poets lost 3-1 to Willamette University earlier today.  

In the first set, the Poets held the Banana Slugs to a .000 hitting percentage and cruised to a 25-14 win and a 1-0 lead in the match. In the second set, the Banana Slugs committed nine errors as the Poets won the second set, just like the first, 25-14 and took a 2-0 lead in the match. The third set was back and forth. The Banana Slugs had nine kills but it was not enough however, as the Poets won the third set 25-23 and won the match 3-0.

For UC Santa Cruz, Tatum Novitzky had six kills and for Whittier, Rebecca Slattery had a match high twelve kills. Gabriela Delarosa had nine assists for UC Santa Cruz and Torrey Mitsunaga had a match high eighteen for Whittier. Hailey McDaniel led the Banana Slugs with eleven digs and Jennifer Estrada had a match high fourteen digs for the Poets.

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a -.020 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the third set at .029 while Whittier had a .202 hitting percentage. The Poets had three more aces (7-4) than did the Banana Slugs.

The Banana Slugs will play their next match on Tuesday as they take on NCAA Division II member Notre Dame De Namur University in Belmont. The first serve is set for 7 pm.
