ROCKLIN (9-5) - UC Santa Cruz played their first road match of the season as they took on NAIA member William Jessup University in Rocklin. The Warriors defeated the Banana Slugs 3-0.
In their last match, the Banana Slugs lost 3-2 to NCAA Division III #5 Southwestern University in Santa Cruz while the Warriors won 3-0 over NAIA member Montana State University-Northern in Atherton on Saturday.
In the first set, the two teams would trade points for the first twenty four serves. The Warriors would take the lead for good, at 13-12, on a solo block by Kassidy Heuvelhorst. The Warriors would gain their largest lead of the set at nine, at set point, on a Vendela Williams solo block. The Warriors won the first set 25-16 and took a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, the Warriors started the set on a 5-0 spurt capped by a Makenzie Reeder-Esparza kill. The Banana Slugs would come as close as two, at 5-3, on a Claire Okerlund kill. The Warriors would expand their lead to double digits, at 16-6, on a Reeder-Esparza kill. The Warriors would take their largest lead of the set at thirteen on two occasions; the second coming at set point on a Heuvelhorst kill. The Warriors won the second set 25-12.
In the third set, the Banana Slugs would start the set outscoring the Warriors 2-1, capped by a Warriorsâ€™ attack error. The one point lead was the largest of the set for the Banana Slugs. The Warriors would gain the lead for good, at 3-2, on an assisted block by Heuvelhorst and Sydney Molander. The Warriors would gain a double digit lead, at 21-11, on a Banana Slugsâ€™ attack error. The Warriors would gain their largest lead of the set at twelve, at match point, on a bad set by the Banana Slugs. Â
For UC Santa Cruz, Okerlund had six kills and for William Jessup, Heuvelhorst had a match high eleven kills. Krysti Photias had eleven assists for UC Santa Cruz and Jessica Williams had a match high thirty for William Jessup. Monica Lee led the Banana Slugs with eight digs and Kacey Berger had a match high thirteen digs for the Warriors.
For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .022 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .125 while William Jessup had a .353 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .500. The Warriors had twenty more digs (51-31) than did the Banana Slugs.
The Banana Slugs will next travel to Southern California to take part in the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational in Thousand Oaks. The Banana Slugs will take on NCAA Division III #11 California Lutheran at 3 pm and Whittier College at 5 pm on Friday.
