Banana Slugs Lose Two on Day One of Cal Lu Fornia Invitational

THOUSAND OAKS (9-8) - UC Santa Cruz played two matches on their first day of the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational hosted by California Lutheran University. The Banana Slugs lost their first match of the day 3-0 to NCAA Division III #11 California Lutheran and lost 3-0 to Whittier College.

Match #1 - vs. #11 California Lutheran University

In the first set, the Banana Slugs would start the set with the first five pointscapped by a Regals' attack error. From that point however , the Regals would go on a 13-5 run, capped by a Banana Slugs' attack error, giving the Regals the lead for good at 13-10. The Banana Slugs would tie the set at 19-19 on a Regals' service error, but the Regals would end the set on a 6-1 spurt to win the first set 25-20 and take a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, the two teams traded points for the first four serves. The Regals would take the lead for good, at 3-2 and would gain a double digit lead at 16-6, on a Banana Slugs' bad set. The Regals would gain their largest lead of the set at twelve on two occasions; the second occasion was at set point, on an Amanda Roberts' kill to win the second set 25-13.

In the third set, the two teams would trade points for the first six serves. From that point, the Regals would go on a 5-0 spurt, capped by a Hope Stewart kill, to give the Regals the lead for good at 8-3. The Regals gained their largest lead of set at eleven, at match point, on a Banana Slugs' bad set. The Regals won the third set 25-14 and won the match 3-0. 

For UC Santa Cruz, Claire Okerlund had eleven kills and for California Lutheran, Stewart had a match-high seventeen kills. Krysti Photias had eleven assists for UC Santa Cruz and Jamie Smith had a match-high thirty-six for California Lutheran. Monica Lee led the Banana Slugs with twelve digs and Roberts had twenty digs for the Regals.

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .156 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .163 while California Lutheran had a .364 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second set at .435. The Regals had thirteen more digs (56-43) than did the Banana Slugs.

Match #2 vs. Whittier

In the first set, the Banana Slugs would start the set with a 4-2 lead after an Okerlund kill. The Poets would get back into the match and would take the lead for good, at 11-10, on a Makenzie Thieme kill. The Poets would take their largest lead of the set at five on four occasions; the fourth occasion at set point on Thieme's kill. The Poets would win the first set 25-20.

In the second set, the two teams traded points for the first ten serves. The Banana Slugs would gain the lead at 6-5 on a Poets’ attack error and would gain their largest lead of the set at 11-6, on a Tatum Novitzky kill. From that point, the Poets would go on a 12-6 run, capped by an Alaina Rhee kill, to gain the lead for good at 18-17. The Poets would gain their largest lead of the set at seven, at set point, on a Thieme kill and won the second set 25-18

The third set started with the Banana Slugs going on a 6-3 spurt capped by a Poets’ attack error. The Poets would respond with an 8-2 spurt of their own, capped by an Alexis Mills kill, to gain the lead for good at 11-8. The Banana Slugs would tie the set, at 12-12, on a Hailey McDaniel kill. The Poets would gain their largest lead of the set at five on four occasions; the fourth occasion at match point on a Jazmyn Sudbrook-Johnson kill. The Poets won the third set 25-20 and won the match.

For UC Santa Cruz, McDaniel had ten kills, and Thieme had a match high thirteen kills for Whittier. Alana Susbilla had a match high twenty-six assists for UC Santa Cruz and Camryn Purdom had twenty-two for Whittier. Lee led the Banana Slugs with fifteen digs and Clarissa Standafer had a match high twenty digs for the Poets.

For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .129 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the third set at .316 while Whittier had a .225 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the third set at .292. The Poets had six more combined blocks (12-6) than did the Banana Slugs.

The Banana Slugs will finish up their time in Southern California at the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational on Saturday. They face NCAA Division III #9 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 11:30 am and Pomona-Pitzer at 2 pm.
