OAKLAND (9-14) - UC Santa Cruz continued their road trip as they took on Mills College in Oakland. The Banana Slugs won 3-0 over the Cyclones.
In the first set, the Banana Slugs led from the beginning. The Banana Slugs had only one attack error in the set and won the first set 25-11 and took a 1-0 lead in the match. In the second set, the Banana Slugs' defense was key. The Banana Slugs allowed three kills by the Cyclones and won the second set 25-8 and took a 2-0 lead in the match. In the third set, the Banana Slugs took control early. The Cyclones did not record a kill in the set and the Banana Slugs won the third set 25-3 and won the match 3-0. The win for the Banana Slugs snapped their seven-match losing streak.
For UC Santa Cruz, Shania Andrews and Jordan Kirchner both had a match-high seven kills and for Mills, Sydney Huddleston had three kills. Krysti Photias had a match-high ten assists for UC Santa Cruz and Huddleston and Taylor Rodriguez both had three for Mills. Hailey McDaniel led the Banana Slugs with eight digs and Vivian Kang had a match-high twelve digs for the Cyclones.
For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a season high .329 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .560 while Mills had a -.083 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second set at .048. The Banana Slugs had sixteen more service aces (18-2) than did the Cyclones, with Alana Susbilla and Amal Peermohammed each serving five.
The Banana Slugs will continue their travels on Wednesday as they take on NAIA opponent Menlo College in Atherton. The first serve is set for 7 pm.
