THOUSAND OAKS - A hard-fighting UC Santa Cruz was swept at Cal Lutheran 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-23) to close their overnight trip to Southern California.
After a 4-0 CLU run made it 12-7 in the first set, UCSC ran off a 6-0 run capped by a block by Jordan Kirchner & Erica Allen to make it 13-12. The teams tied the next seven points until the hosts finished the set on a 6-1 run to win 25-20.
The second set opened with a Claire Okerlund kill to give the Slugs a 1-0, but they never led again after CLU went on a 5-0 run. There were four ties - the last at 19-all - before CLU held off the Slugs again with a 6-3 run to finish the set and take a 2-0 lead.
UCSC started the third set tough to tie it at 4-all, but CLU went on a 15-5 run for a 19-9 lead. UCSC went on a 12-4 run to get to within two, but after the Regals called timeout, the hosts squeezed in the 2 points they needed to win the match.
Freshman Shania Andrews led UCSC with a season-high eight kills as UCSC hit .176 for the match. Allen had seven while Alexandra Everett and Sierra Yuen had six each. Krysti Photias had 20 assists and two aces. Rachel Svieven had a season-high 17 digs.
UCSC finishes the season with a three-game homestand, starting Monday night vs. Mills.
