Banana Slugs Come From Behind to Defeat Pioneers

LANCASTER (10-21) - UC Santa Cruz started their two match trip to Southern California as they took on NAIA member University of Antelope Valley in Lancaster. The Banana Slugs won 3-2 over the Pioneers.

In their last match, the Banana Slugs lost 3-0 to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps last Saturday in Claremont while the Pioneers won 3-0 over UC Merced yesterday in Merced.

In the first set, the two teams would play back and forth volleyball but in the end, it was the Pioneers who won the first set 25-22 and took a 1-0 lead in the match. In the second set, the Banana Slugs committed six errors and the Pioneers won the second set 25-19. In the third set, the Banana Slugs had eleven kills and won the set 25-14 and trimmed the Pioneers' lead to 2-1. In the fourth set, the Banana Slugs overcame seven attack errors and won the fourth set 25-17 to tie the match at 2-2. In the fifth set, the Banana Slugs did not have an error as they won the fifth set 15-5 and won the match 3-2. The win ends the Banana Slugs' twelve match losing streak.

For UC Santa Cruz, Claire Okerlund had eleven kills, Krysti Photias had twenty eight assists and Sveiven had twenty one digs.

The Banana Slugs will have their next match later today as they take on California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks.
