SANTA CRUZ (10-28) - UC Santa Cruz completed their 2017 regular season schedule against the University of Dallas at the West Field House. The match, which honored the seniors from both schools, was won by the Banana Slugs 3-0.
In the first set, the Banana Slugs would outscore the Crusaders 5-3. The Crusaders would respond with a 3-0 spurt, capped by a Mary Scholz kill, to take their largest lead of the set at 6-5. The Banana Slugs would then go on a 6-0 run, capped by a Krysti Photias kill, to gain the lead for good at 11-6. The Banana Slugs would take their largest lead of the set at nine at set point on a Sierra Yuen kill to win the set 25-16.
The Crusaders started the second set outscoring the Banana Slugs 5-3. The Banana Slugs would then go on a 10-2 run, capped by a Yuen kill, for a 13-7 lead. The six point lead would be the largest of the set for the Banana Slugs. The Crusaders would then go on a 14-8 run, capped by Samantha Garza's kill, to tie the set at 21-21. The Crusaders would go up by two, at 24-22, on a service ace. The Banana Slugs would score the next three points with two on attack errors by the Crusaders and a kill by Hailey McDaniel to give them a 25-24 lead. For the next nine serves, the two teams traded points and the lead. The Banana Slugs would tie the set at 29-all on Yuen's kill and then would get two kills by Claire Okerlund to win the set 31-29 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, the Banana Slugs started the set on a 4-0 spurt, capped by an Okerlund kill. The Crusaders would come as close as two, at 11-9. From that point, the Banana Slugs would go on a 9-0 run, capped by a Yuen kill, for their largest lead at 20-9. The Banana Slugs would win the third set 25-16 , the Banana Slugs' third in five matches.
For UC Santa Cruz, Kallan Bedard had a match-high sixteen kills,her season-high and put her over 400 kills for her career. Krysti Photias had a match-high nineteen assists for UC Santa Cruz and Mary Goodykoontz also had a nineteen for University of Dallas. Hailey McDaniel led the Banana Slugs with a match-high sixteen digs.
For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .258 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the third set at .364 while University of Dallas hit .103 with the best percentage coming in the second set at .243. The Banana Slugs had eight more blocks (14-6) than did the Crusaders.
