SAN MARCOS (9-21) – UC Santa Cruz continued their three match road trip as they took on NCCAA member University of Saint Katherine in San Marcos. The Firebirds won the match 3-1.
Both teams won their last match. The Banana Slugs won 3-2 over NAIA member Menlo College in Atherton on Wednesday while the Firebirds won 3-2 over Westcliff University yesterday in Irvine.
In the first set, the Firebirds started the set on an 11-2 run capped by a Rylee Zimmerman kill. The Banana Slugs would come as close as four, at 19-15, on a ball handling error by the Firebirds. The Firebirds won the first 25-15 and took a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, the Banana Slugs started the set on an 8-3 run capped by a service ace by Rachel Sveiven. The Banana Slugs would never relinquish the lead in the set. The Banana Slugs gained their largest lead of the set at set point on a Claire Okerlund kill. The Banana Slugs won the second set 25-18 and tied the match at 1-1.
In the third set, the two teams would trade points for the first twenty two serves. The Firebirds would take the lead for good at 13-12 on a service error by the Banana Slugs. The Banana Slugs would come as close as one on three occasions; the third occasion at 24-23 on a kill by Shania Andrews. The Firebirds won the third set 25-23 and took a 2-1 lead in the match.
In the fourth set, the two teams would trade points for the first sixteen serves. The Firebirds would take the lead for good at 9-8 on a kill by Cheyenne Chambers. The Banana Slugs would come as close as three on three occasions; the third occasion at 24-21 on a Maddie Fowler kill. The Firebirds won the fourth set 25-21.
For UC Santa Cruz, Okerlund had a match high seventeen kills and for University of Saint Katherine, Colleen Jones had twelve kills. Alana Susbilla had twenty-seven assists for UC Santa Cruz and Brittany Mitchell had a match high thirty-three for University of Saint Katherine. Sveiven led the Banana Slugs with a match high twenty-six digs and Rylee Zimmerman had twenty digs for the Firebirds.
For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .180 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second set at .250 while University of Saint Katherine had a .172 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the first set at .273. The Firebirds had two more service aces (10-8) than did the Banana Slugs.
The Banana Slugs will conclude their three match road trip tomorrow as they take on NCAA Division III #RV Chapman University in Orange. The first serve is set for 2 pm.
