ORANGE (9-22) – UC Santa Cruz completed their three-match road trip as they took NCAA Division III #RV Chapman University in Orange. The Panthers swept the Banana Slugs 3-0.
Today's match was a rematch of a match that was played on September 8th in Thousand Oaks which saw the Panthers win 3-1. Both teams lost their last match. The Banana Slugs lost 3-1 to NCCAA member University of Saint Katherine last night in San Marcos while the Panthers lost 3-0 to Whittier College last night in Whittier.
In the first set, the Panthers started the set on a 22-8 run and won the first set 25-10 to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, the Panthers started on a 15-4 run capped by a kill by Jessi Lumsden. The Banana Slugs would come as close as four on three occasions; the third occasion at 18-14 on a Claire Okerlund kill. The Panthers however finished on a 7-1 run and won the second set 25-15.
In the third set, the two teams traded points for the first eight serves. The Banana Slugs would take the lead, at 5-4, on a kill by Alexandria Everett. The Panthers would get back into the set and would take the lead for good at 15-14 on a kill by Sophie Srivastava before winning the third set 25-22.
For UC Santa Cruz, Maddie Fowler led the Slugs with six kills and for Chapman, Lumsden had a match high ten kills. Timolin Kepon had six assists for UC Santa Cruz and Rachel Sveiven led the Banana Slugs with eight digs. Sara Utsugi had a match high thirteen digs for the Panthers.
For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .077 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the third set at .156 while Chapman had a .340 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second set at .481. The Banana Slugs had three more ball handling errors (5-2) than did the Panthers.
The Banana Slugs will return home on Friday as they take on Mills College at Kaiser Permanente Arena. First serve is set for 7 pm.
