SANTA CRUZ (9-28) – UC Santa Cruz returned home to take on Mills College at Kaiser Permanente Arena. The Banana Slugs won 3-0 over the visiting Cyclones.
Today's match is a rematch of a match that was played on September 14th in Santa Cruz, at West Field House, which saw the Banana Slugs win 3-0.
In the first set, the Banana Slugs started the set on a 22-4 run capped by a Maiya Sears kill. The Banana Slugs won the first set 25-6 and took a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, the Banana Slugs started the set on an 11-2 run, capped by an Alexandria Everett kill. The Banana Slugs won the second set 25-8 and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, the Cyclones started the set on a 6-1 run, capped by an assisted block by Nina Tompkins and Myeisha Williams. The Banana Slugs would then go on a 10-0 run, capped by an Isabella Hoglund kill, to give the Banana Slugs the lead for good at 11-6. The Banana Slugs won the third set 25-11.
For UC Santa Cruz, Everett had a match-high nine kills and for Mills, Williams had five kills. Timolin Kepon had a match-high twenty assists for UC Santa Cruz and Stephanie Morales had eight for Mills. Gio Martins led the Banana Slugs with a match-high eleven digs and Lici Zimmerman had eight digs for the Cyclones.
For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .438 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second set at .565 while Mills had a -.014 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the second set at .192. The Banana Slugs had fourteen more services aces (14-0) than did the Cyclones, led by a season-high six from Rachel Sveiven.
The Banana Slugs will hit the road next weekend as they will travel to Southern California to take part in the Leopard Invitational hosted by University of La Verne and Pomona-Pitzer on Friday and Saturday.
