CLAREMONT (10-6) – UC Santa Cruz finished their trip to Southern California as they took on Pomona-Pitzer and DeSales University of Pennsylvania in day two of the Leopard Invitational at Voelkel Gymnasium on the campus of Pomona-Pitzer. The Banana Slugs won the first match 3-0 over the homestanding Sagehens and lost 3-0 to the Bulldogs in the second match.
Match #1 – vs. Pomona-Pitzer
In the first set, the Sagehens started the set on a 19-4 run capped by a service ace, and won the first set 25-6. In the second set, the Banana Slugs started the set on a 9-3 spurt capped by a kill by Jordan Kirchner. The Banana Slugs would win the second set 25-18. In the third set, the Poets started the set on a 17-9 run capped by an Isabel Kelly kill. But the Banana Slugs would then go on a 14-6 run, capped by an attack error by the Sagehens, to tie the match at 23-23. The two teams traded points for the next four serves. The Banana Slugs would score the final two points of the set to win 27-25. In the fourth set, the Banana Slugs would start the set on a 9-3 run capped by a Maiya Sears kill. The Sagehens then went on a 6-0 run to tie the set at 9-9. The two teams would trade points, and the lead, over the next ten serves. The Banana Slugs took the lead for good at 15-14 on an attack error by the Sagehens and won the fourth set 25-19.
Match #2 vs. DeSales
In the first set, the Banana Slugs would start the set on a 6-3 spurt capped by a kill by Andrews. The Bulldogs would then go on a 6-1 run, capped by a service ace, to give the Bulldogs the lead at 9-7. The Banana Slugs would work their way back into the match and would take the lead at 15-14 on a Sierra Yuen kill. The Bulldogs would take the lead back, at 18-17, on a Gabby Savite' kill. The Bulldogs won the first set 25-19. In the second set, the Bulldogs would start the set on a 5-2 spurt capped by a Morghan Shoemaker kill. The Banana Slugs would get back into the set and would take the lead at 7-6 on a Claire Okerlund kill. The Bulldogs would regain the lead at 8-7 and would keep the lead for the rest of the set and won the second set 25-21. In the third set, the Bulldogs started the set on a 9-2 run capped by a Savite' kill enroute to a 25-17 third set win.
Okerlund and Sears had nine kills each to lead the Banana Slugs. Alana Susbilla had 10 digs and 19 assists, passing Jennifer Smythe for 8th place for career assists at UCSC with 878.
The Banana Slugs return home for an exhibition Wednesday against West Valley College at Kaiser Permanente Arena. They return to regular season action next weekend as they will travel to Minnesota to take part in the St. Catherine Invite in Saint Paul.
