Slugs Finish 2nd at William Jessup

Slugs Finish 2nd at William Jessup

The UCSC Cross Country team raced their "B" squad in Rocklin over the weekend at the William Jessup Invitational, finishing a close second to Fresno Pacific. It was a small meet with just four schools competing, and for that reason the Slugs held some runners out. "We didn't race three of our top five," said Head Coach Adam Boothe, "They actually got more out of doing a long workout on the course beforehand."

The Banana Slugs still ran well, only losing to winner Fresno Pacific 22-33. It was the team's first visit to what turned out to be a very windy and challenging 5K course. The top finisher for the Slugs was Freshman Ashley Stalzer in sixth place, running 21:16. Katy Haynes(JR) and Angie Laurence(SO) also finished in the top 10, running 21:46 and 22:15 respectively.

The team will have this weekend off before traveling to Salem, Oregon for the Willamette Invitational on September 30th. The meet in Oregon is one of the largest and most competitive in the West, with several nationally ranked programs in the race. " We always race well in Salem." said Boothe, " Its a very fast course, and the girls look forward to this race every year."
