Women's Cross Country Receives Four All-Conference Honors - Boothe Named DIII Independents Co-Coach of the Year

SANTA CRUZ, CA -- The 2008 Women's Cross Country season has proved to be one of the most successful running seasons in the programs young history. Recently the program received four All-Conference honors from the Association of Division III Independents. At the top of the list was Head Coach Adam Boothe, who was named the women's co-coach of the year, sharing the honors with Judy Hawkins (University of Dallas).

Boothe is in his sixth year at the helm of the Slug Women's Cross Country program, Boothe took over the program midway through the 2003 season, when the program was only in its second year. Adam has used his Division I championship running experience and strong recruiting skills to build a successful program from the ground up.

This season Adam guided the team to its highest West Region rankings and highest finish at the DIII West Regional Championships – 7th overall. The Slugs had a pre-season No. 5 ranking and finished the season ranked No. 7, both were new highs for the program. Boothe has now coached six All-West Region runners and three National qualifiers.

This year the Slugs were led by Sophomore Mikayla Murphy and Senior Carina Hendricks – both were named 1st Team All-Independent. Murphy spent the season breaking UCSC course records and top times on her way to a 2nd place finish at the West Regionals. While Hendricks, the Slugs' lone senior, brought experience and consistency to a young team and finished with a 14th place showing at Regionals. Both runners qualified for the NCAA DIII Cross Country Championships, where Murphy finished 58th overall and Hendricks 218th.

Finally, freshmen standout Jenny Cain received Honorable Mention honors from the Association of DIII Independents. Cain hit the ground running this season, proving herself to be one of the Slugs top runners as she consistently finished right behind Hendricks and Murphy.

Congratulations to Adam, Mikayla, Carina and Jenny for their remarkable efforts this season.
